Having a BAD day in business?

We all have those days in business. The bad days. But sometimes we can have a freaking DOOZY!

I play winter netball. To get that sense of belonging that I miss from being in corporate. The team energy and camaraderie. That is something incredible don’t you think?

SO, I am part of this amazing team. They play at a high level. I was invited into the team.
Anyway I play the goal shoot. When I am “On” I am GREAT. When I am “OFF” I am BADDDDD. Like seriously.

This past Saturday I played the worst I have ever done since playing two seasons…..We have a set rule that after the game we must share a positive thing we did as individual players and as a team. I had to DIG deep…. ” I was happy when I knew it was time for me to get off the court!” It was the truth and I felt positive that I knew when it was time to surrender.

I overthought my whole game, because my team members really like to offer me support, by “coaching” me all the time on my position. Which is great at training, but we had missed training that week and we did a bit of a cram session. Now I have the type of personality where I want to keep everyone happy who gave me strategic advice. So I literally became a robot and lost my natural action…DUH! (Bloody hindsight!)

I got on court with a frown.
Big fuck up that was.
I was so in my head. I was so busy trying to keep everyone happy that I literally paralysed myself…I had one member yell out “Nat look interested in the ball!” I was so concerned about being in the right place, that all my movements became clunky, literal and unnatural to my body and mind…Cue missed goals, not getting free and finally the team getting fed up  and not even giving me the ball (I don’t blame them I would be the same).

At one stage I wanted to cry and go home. I felt like the weakest link and I was single handedly loosing the game. When the truth was my mindset was wrong….All I could focus on was myself and all the negative things…I was spiralling, my playing got worse. I stopped trying.
It really was true it was time to get off…And fast.

Why am I sharing this?

Because it is the same in business. Let’s break it down:

Getting too much advice from different people all in one go:
This really is the most overwhelming thing to do in your business. It dilutes your natural flow, your trusted way of getting shit done is shut down. Cue clunking process and unnatural responses. You get exhausted more quickly (from frowning) but mostly from over thinking. Getting advice at the right time, from the right person is great. Be careful that the advice is from someone who can help you implement it into your natural way, can see you when you are over thinking and can pull you off the court.

Being in paralysis:
This isn’t the time to keep going. It is actually the best time to stop. See that you are making it about one experience, see what blocks, and programming it is bringing up. Then journal this out. Don’t keep pushing to the point of complete disaster.

Future proofing:
You can’t really control when overwhelm will come. But you can feel the warning signs, the mind chatter will start. Your performance will lag and you will have lost your internal compass. Pretty large in-ya-face evidence to get off the court so to speak and get your head sorted. BUT mostly protect yourself from downloading more advice, and not implementing what you have already been told. Practice that.

But most of all… You gotta dust yourself off. Tick it off to experience to become better. Everyone has a bad day, but it’s about getting back up the next day with the lessons.
